Retail Operations Lead


At Bellroy, we put our heart, soul and countless design hours into helping the world carry better. Getting our products under people’s noses in a physical retail space is key to making this mission a success. Our retail presence (in 1200+ stores) is growing and we need a retail lead who can help spur our in-store conversions, and drive even faster retail growth.

As Bellroy’s go-to person for retail conversion, you’ll be involved in the marketing funnel for bricks and mortar retail at all levels, from strategy and planning, to implementation and results reporting. Starting with our highest leverage retailers, you'll look for new and innovative ways to achieve strong commercial outcomes, while maintaining our brand ideals.

You’ll report to our Creative Director, and work within our marketing team to nut out a plan, get it live, and then iterate as we learn more. And you will work closely with our wholesale and data teams to assess the performance of every activity. And then you’ll work with yourself to build a process that we can use for the months (years?) to come.

You’re fascinated by consumer psychology. You like to delve into your well-developed suite of marketing tools and figure out which one will work best at any given time, to cut through the noise and drive a sale.

You’ve probably been involved with retail from several angles, and proven time and time again you have a knack for marketing a brand. You might have gained that knack from studying it at uni and continuing on the path from there, or you might have realised it after working for retail brands in a different capacity for a few years. But you’ve been in marketing roles ever since, and you can’t imagine a better place for you. Especially when it’s the nitty gritty kind of marketing – you know, the kind that’s full of implementation and analysis?

You’re practical. Analytical. Reliable. You love to make things happen – action and outcomes are important to you. And delivering real projects that achieve commercial goals is what drives you. While you can think ‘blue sky’ when you need to, your favourite thing is to execute a project down to the finest detail, measure its effectiveness and then work to make it better next time.

You're comfortable with facts and figures, and use data to better inform your ideas and assess opportunities as they arise. But there’s a human side to what you do, which you can appreciate as much as you do the data. You’re figuring out how to make a human commit to a purchase, after all. You are a smart, no-nonsense kind of person, and that’s often what people love about you.


  • Worked with our Creative Director and Global Sales Director to roadmap our retail strategy, from short-term activities to longer term goals
  • Reviewed the sales data from a recent activation, noting what worked well and what could be improved for next time
  • Worked with the data team and Global Sales Director to figure out how to measure the success of a retail activation you are planning
  • Worked with our digital marketing team to roll out a localised ad campaign for a new or important retailer
  • Worked with our digital and creative teams to analyse the strengths of our brand via our digital channels, and looked for ways to emulate this through physical stores
  • Got your geek on, reading ‘Why People Buy’ to brush up on your customer modelling
  • Prepared a report for the Exec Team on recent retail activations against pre-defined success criteria
  • Conducted a retrospective with the team on what worked and what could be improved next time
  • Gushed over a new store opening and shared your thoughts on why with the rest of the team


  • 4–6 years experience in a similar role/field
  • A degree in marketing or business, or equivalent experience
  • Deep understanding of the workings of retail and/or wholesale relationships
  • An understanding of the customer experience in a retail environment
  • Experience with tactics and strategies used to drive conversions in a physical retail environment
  • Strong project management skills, with an understanding of the many stages of rolling out projects in-store
  • The ability to multitask and collaborate across many teams
  • Strategic thinking and the ability to assess opportunities from an ROI perspective
  • Clear communication skills, including the ability to help others understand a project’s objectives

Our beach HQ sits behind giant sandstone cliffs that overlook one of Australia’s best-known surfing coastlines. It’s where our Product Designers experiment in the Maker Lab, and our Sales team consume awesome amounts of espresso and Skype bandwidth. Things are more tranquil here than our Fitzroy neighbours and we like the focus that can create. There’s a cafe right next door if you need a quick bite and our 11am surf check always provides the perfect chance to reset the mind with some salt air.


Our Fitzroy space is immersed in the middle of Melbourne’s creative hub. It’s where our Creative, Marketing, Engineering and Operations teams develop campaigns and ensure each Bellroy is sent safely across the world. Walk out the door and you’ll find streets bursting with energy (and the best ramen joint this side of Tokyo). There’s also an olympic-size pool just around the corner for those in need of a lunchtime refresh.


Outside of our two main headquarters we have a team that works remotely - from Western Australia to parts of Asia, the USA and Europe. Being global is at the heart of Bellroy, it keeps us connected, and makes sure we see life from many different perspectives.
